Department of Economics
Historically, the Yangon University of Economics originated as Department of Economics under the University of Rangoon (Yangon) in 1924. In December 1964, it was established as a major department in Yangon Institute of Economics. The Department of Economics is one of the most prestigious research and education institutions of social science in Yangon University of Economics, whose educational programs have successfully been developed to cultivate leading academic and policy decision makers.
Being one of the five major academic departments of the university, the Department of Economics offers two undergraduate and postgraduate diploma programs, master and PhD programs specializing in economics and development studies. First, the Department of Economics offered B.Econ (Economics) only; then Development Studies program (Bachelor of Development Studies-BDevS) has been offered since the academic term (2014 – 2015). Those are full time course and necessary to complete over a four-year period. After completing of Bachelor degree, the students can join the post graduate course MEcon (Economics) which is a full time program with two-year period. Doctor of Philosophy in Economics (PhD) is the highest academic Degree offered by our department. It is a five-year doctorate level course, taking one year for coursework and need to take four years for preparing dissertation. Graduates are expected to be able to enlarge their opportunities in their respective fields of work and to be fully equipped to deal with problems of development of especially developing countries.
The Yangon University of Economics launched Master of Development Studies (MDevS) programme under the Department of Economics in 2003 in order to fulfill not only the vision for life-long learning but also to have a better understanding of development issues. The MDevS programme offers both full-time and evening programmes. The students from both programmes require two years’ study plus a research paper. The courses offering and faculty expertise in the University provide graduate students the opportunities to learn the policy-oriented areas in the Economics and Development such as international trade and regional integration, development strategies, regional and urban development, and industrialization in local and global environment. A balance between theoretical and policy-oriented modules is sought in this programme.
