Department of Applied Economics

The Department of Applied Economics offers an array of both undergraduate and graduate programs designed to help students develop their analytical and professional skills. At the undergraduate level, we have a four-year programme which offers Bachelor of Public Administration (BPA). For the graduate level, we have two Master’s programmes which offer Master of Public Administration (MPA). One is two-year MPA programme for the full time students.  The other is two year MPA progrmme of evening classes for executive students, with various academic disciplines, working in Public, Private and Nonprofit Institutions. In addition to these Master’s programme, we also offer a nine-month graduate program of Diploma, Diploma in Development Studies (Dip DS). BPA courses are available in both Ywar-thar-gyi Campus and Hlaing Campus, but MPA courses are opened in Kamayut Campus only. Dip DS course is also available in Hlaing Campus only.

The faculties of our department are experts in economics and public administration and prominent researchers in their respective fields of studies. Visiting professors of Law and Ethics are also invited from a famous University, the University of Yangon. They provide students with academic knowledge as well as research capacity to promote their intellectual and creative skills.

Being launched in 2000, BPA programme produced more than (1000) graduates and DipDS programme produced more than (2500) graduates. MPA programme was started in the year 2000 and as it is one of the top programmes of our university, entrance examinations are quite competitive for candidates. Over 20 years of period, the programme successfully produced over (1800) MPA graduates who have played critical roles in politics, public administration, business, and non-profit organizations. Most of our MPA graduates, as outstanding high-ranked officials and professionals, are currently serving to the nation in various areas. Many MPA graduates are in the administration circle of the nation. Some of them are in the field of politics and successful members of parliaments. Some are contributing to the nation as ministers in the present cabinet of the regional governments. Our MPA graduates have been also seen as capable persons in the arena of non-profit organizations.

The academics of our department are experts in economics and public administration, and prominent researchers in their respective fields of study. Professors from the University of Yangon also participate in our programmes to offer the courses in Administrative Law and Administrative Ethics. We provide students with academic knowledge as well as research capacity to promote their intellectual and creative skills.

Brief Background of the Department of Applied Economics

The Yangon University of Economics is a State University which is under the Department of Higher Education (Yangon Region, Myanmar), Ministry of Education. On the 5th of February in 1988, a new academic Department, the Department of Applied Economics was created accordance with the new organization structure of the University and the MPA programme has been introduced since the year 2000. Now this programme has been on 20th academic year. The academic staffs in the Department of Applied Economics currently consists of Head of Department, two Professors, four Associate Professors, fifteen Lecturers, seven Assistant Lecturers, two Tutors, one part time Tutor and two Office Staffs.
